Trends in the development of innovative nanobiocatalysts and their application in biocatalytic transformations.

The ever-growing demand for cost-effective and innocuous biocatalytic transformations has prompted the rational design and development of robust biocatalytic tools. Enzyme immobilization technology lies in the formation of cooperative interactions between the tailored surface of the support and the enzyme of choice, which result in the fabrication of tremendous biocatalytic tools with desirable properties, complying with the current demands even on an industrial level. Different nanoscale materials (organic, inorganic, and green) have attracted great attention as immobilization matrices for single or multi-enzymatic systems. Aiming to unveil the potentialities of nanobiocatalytic systems, we present distinct immobilization strategies and give a thorough insight into the effect of nanosupports specific properties on the biocatalysts' structure and catalytic performance. We also highlight the development of nanobiocatalysts for their incorporation in cascade enzymatic processes and various types of batch and continuous-flow reactor systems. Remarkable emphasis is given on the application of such nanobiocatalytic tools in several biocatalytic transformations including bioremediation processes, biofuel production, and synthesis of bioactive compounds and fine chemicals for the food and pharmaceutical industry.

A novel enzymatic approach based on the use of multi-enzymatic systems for the recovery of enriched protein extracts from potato pulp.

Ten commercial available multi-enzymatic systems have been explored for the efficient recovery of patatin and protease inhibitors from potato pulp. Their enzyme activity profile was characterized, where corresponding enzyme activity profile led to similar protein recovery yield. Of those assessed, Depol 670L (DEP) and Ceremix 2XL (CER) were efficient for the recovery of protein extract enriched with patatin (up to 60.0%) and protease inhibitors (up to 72.0%), respectively. The efficiency of DEP was significantly dependent on the interactive effect of enzymatic units and incubation time (p-value <0.015), while CER was found to be affected by the quadratric effect of both variables (p-value <0.022-0.052). The enriched patatin DEP-based protein extract possessed higher lipid acyl hydrolase activity emphasizing its preservation. The enriched protease inhibitors CER-based protein extract resulted in higher trypsin inhibiting activity, when compared to the industrial method. DEP and CER-based protein extracts were structurally characterized by peptide mass mapping.

La Homeopatía es parcialmente experimental debido a que su semiología nació con la experimentación sobre el hombre sano, efectuada según el método hahnemanniano; asimismo, es parcialmente empírica porque se basa en el trabajo de observación de los médicos homeópatas y en la adquisición de la experiencia práctica, la cual ha sido transmitida a alumnos deseosos de utilizar este método terapéutico. La investigación en Homeopatía se ha desarrollado progresivamente, tratando de integrar las aportaciones de estos dos métodos: experimental y empírico. De hecho, los esfuerzos realizados por situar a la Homeopatía dentro de una metodología rigurosa se remontan al inicio mismo de esta disciplina, inscrita desde su origen por Hahnemann dentro de la línea científica y médica original. Homeopathy is in part experimental because the semiology was born with the experimentation on the healthy man, which was performed according to Hahnemann´s method; it is also partly empirical because much work is based on the observation of homeopaths and the acquisition of practical experience, which has been transmitted to students eager to use this therapeutic method. Research in Homeopathy has been gradually developed, trying to integrate the contributions of these two methods: experimental and empirical. In fact, efforts have been made to place homeopathy within a rigorous methodology dating back to the beginning of the discipline itself, from its origin registered by Hahnemann within the original scientific and medical field.
